Frequently asked questions about the nbn™

nbn™ speeds can vary due to a number of factors.

  1. The nbn™ technology connected to your premises.
  2. Your speed tier.
  3. The service provider’s network capability
  4. Your in home setup and how you use your service

The nbn™ technology connected to your premises

nbn™ co uses mixture of different technologies, to connect your premises to the nbn™.

Your maximum line speed is the maximum speed the infrastructure is capable of, and is determined by the type of technology nbn™ connects to your premises. The infrastructure connected to your address is the same, regardless of which service provider you choose.
It is normal for the speed of your internet connection to be slower than the maximum line speed, and speeds will vary due to a range of additional factors.

Technology types provided by nbn™ co

nbn™ Fibre to the Premises

nbn™ Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) is the scenario where we're able to run a fibre optic line all the way to your premises.

nbn™ Fibre to the Building

nbn™ Fibre to the Building (FTTB) is generally used when we're connecting an apartment block or similar type of building to the nbn™ broadband access network.

nbn™ Fibre to the Curb

nbn™ Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) is where fibre is extended close to your premises. Here it is connected to the existing copper network inside a small Distribution Point Unit, creating the final nbn™ connection.

nbn™ Fibre to the Node

<p "="">nbn™ Fibre to the Node (FTTN) is where we run nbn™ Fibre to a newly built cabinet and then connect with the existing copper network.

More details about FTTN

Factors influencing copper line speed

Technologies using copper cable have additional factors which may reduce speeds, including:

  • The length of copper cable from the node to your wall socket
  • The condition of the copper, and exposure to the elements
  • Any additional wall sockets, intercoms, or alarm systems connected within the home
  • Any internal or external electrical interference

Your speed tier

We offer 3 speed tiers.
